I’d interrogate the assumption that when things aren’t structured they are ‘free’. You start doing something, and initially you are acting out of habbit, that, I think, is what we call free. Then, as you familiarize yourself with what’s going on, the spirit becomes more that of inquiry. That’s how I think of it. I want to know how narrowly I can trap a phenomena, how an instrument, a pitch or group of pitches, or a piece of technology will behave, under extremely refined circumstances. But it’s not really decision making… I start doing something, and at first I’m just doing me, but then curiosity about some quality takes over, and that curiosity burns off everything that’s in the way of the question.
